Bruce Springsteen’s Manager Settles “Thunder Road” Lyric Debate

It’s official: Mary’s dress “sways,” not “waves.” Bruce Springsteen’s longtime manager John Landau has settled an age-old debate about the lyrics of the song “Thunder Road.”

Fans have argued over the lyrics for decades, especially since “waves” is what's printed in the lyrics for the original 1975 vinyl pressing of “Thunder Road.” But in a statement to the “New Yorker,” John says The Boss is in fact singing “sways”... and that they’ll be correcting “any typos in official Bruce material.” Already, the website has been updated to use the word “sways.”

“By the way, ‘dresses’ do not know how to ‘wave’,” John adds. “That’s the way he wrote it in his original notebooks, that’s the way he sang it on ‘Born to Run,’ in 1975, that’s the way he has always sung it at thousands of shows, and that’s the way he sings it right now on Broadway.”
