John “Hutch” Hutchinson, early David Bowie collaborator who played guitar on “Space Oddity,” has died at 73. The British guitarist passed away over the weekend after a long illness.
The sad news has been shared in a message posted to David Bowie’s official website. Before his death, John was described as a “semi-retired and little-known jazz guitarist, [and a] veteran of three important David Bowie bands for seven years between 1966 and 1973.”
John and David first connected in 1966 when he auditioned for the singer’s backing band The Buzz, going on to start a folk project Feathers together, which was when they recorded an early version of what would become David’s unlikely hit “Space Oddity.”
