Janet Jackson opens up about her sometimes difficult relationship with brother Michael Jackson in her new Lifetime documentary, “Janet,” which premieres Friday. The singer discusss the “scrutiny” she was under as part of the Jackson family, and says Michael was particularly mean about her weight struggles.
“There were times when Mike used to tease me and call me names. Pig, horse, slut, or hog, cow,” Jackson said. “He would laugh about it, and I’d laugh too, but then there was somewhere down inside that it would hurt.” She adds, “When you have somebody say you’re too heavy, it affects you.”
She also discusses the difficulties being a part of the Jackson family, particularly as Michael was dealing with his court battles. “It was frustrating for me,” she said. “We have our own separate lives and even though he’s my brother, that has nothing to do with me,” noting, “But I wanted to be there for him, to support him as much as I possibly could.” She says Michael’s troubles affected her career also, noting that she lost a Coca Cola gig because of Michael’s legal troubles, explaining, “Guilty by association. That’s what they call it, right?”
- Janet says her relationship with her brother began to change around the time of the “Thriller” album. “I remember really loving the ‘Thriller’ album, but for the first time in my life I felt it was different between us, a shift was happening,” she says. “That’s the time Mike and I started going our separate ways. He just wasn’t as fun as he used to be.”
