The 2022 Songwriters Hall of Fame induction went down late last week, with Mariah Carey, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart (the Eurythmics), Isley Brothers, Steve Miller, Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (the Neptunes), Rick Nowels, and William “Mickey” Stevenson all being inducted.
Also honored at the induction was Lil Nas X, who received Hal David Starlight Award, becoming the first rapper to receive that honor since Drake.
- During her speech, Mariah talked about how she learned to write songs during her “dysfunctional childhood,” but adds that many don’t realize she’s more than just a singer. “I constantly have to remind people I'm a songwriter,” she shared. “It's become a joke to the point where ... Because they're all onto the diva thing, it's like 'Oh my gosh, she's a diva, wow, a diva.' Whatever.’”
- The night featured several special performances. St. Vincent covered the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This),” while the Eurythmics themselves performed “Here Comes the Rain Again.” Jon Batiste and Usher honored the Neptunes with a performance of “Hollaback Girl,” “Frontin’” and “Lemon,” and Miller performed his own “Fly Like An Eagle.”
- Mariah was honored with a medley sung by Yolanda Adams, Wayna Morris and 13-year-old YouTube star Liamani Segura, which included such hits as “Fantasy,” “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” “Heartbreaker,” “We Belong Together,” “Hero,” “One Sweet Day,” “Make it Happen” and “Fly Like a Bird.” And Leslie Odom Jr. honored the Isley Brothers by singing “Work to Do.”
