Scientists Start Measuring Impact Of Maui Fires On The Ocean And Reefs: Scientists are working to measure the impact of the Maui wildfires on the ocean. Last weekend, teams from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and the Pacific Whale Foundation installed water quality sensors off the coast of Lahaina. The sensors will measure the presence of contaminants and reef health. A water inspection conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in mid-September found a thick sludge of ash, debris and fiberglass in Lahaina Harbor. But, no sludge has been found in the area of nearby Mala Wharf.
