Van Halen almost had a very different sound when David Lee Roth left in 1985. Of course, he was replaced by Sammy Hagar but in a new interview Hall & Oates’ Daryl Hall says he was actually asked by Eddie Van Halen to take over for Roth.

Asked if it was true on Q104’s “Out Of The Box With Jonathan Clarke,” Daryl replied, “Actually, yes.”

“I knew those guys really well; we actually shared some people — crew and things like that. And Eddie came to a show with [his then-wife] Valerie [Bertinelli] — this goes back, you know — and David had just left the band,” he explains. “And Eddie said, 'Do you wanna join VAN HALEN, man?'”

Daryl says Eddie was “was half joking, but I think he was serious — I really do believe he was serious.” He adds, “And I took it seriously. I went, 'Meh, I think not. I think I've got my own sh*t going on.'"
