Dead & Company have thrown in the towel on their Mexican festival. The two-weekend “Playing in the Sand” fest was supposed to kick off today, but the band just announced that it will no longer go on as planned due to COVID concerns.

“With much sadness and after great consideration of every possible scenario, the Playing in the Sand shows in Riviera Cancun on January 7-10 and January 13-16 have now been canceled by CID Presents due to the spiking COVID-19 cases,” reads a statement from the band. “Dead & Company and CID Presents tried everything possible to bring normalcy and to deliver a great experience and amazing music, but with each day it became increasingly clear that canceling is the correct thing to do for the fans and for our crew.”

As we previously told you, earlier this week John Mayer was forced to bow out of the fest after testing positive for COVID, and drummer Bill Kreutzmann dropped out as well as he continues to recover from heart surgery.

Fans who bought tickets to “Playing The Sand” will be receiving info on refunds shortly.
