It’s a “we told you so” that has some weight to it. Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett talked about the band’s legal fight with Napster years ago, and he says “We warned everyone that this was gonna happen. We warned everyone that the music industry was gonna lose 80 percent of its net worth, power, and influence.”

When Metallica started fighting against the file-sharing of MP3s through the program, music fans and pundits gave them a lot of grief about their attitude towards the practice, but now Hammett feels they were justified and says he sympathizes with younger acts that aren’t getting the massive album sales that artists did before file sharing and streaming.

Hammett recently released a solo instrumental EP, “Portals,” which is available on vinyl through Amazon and is available for streaming.
