Linda Lewis, Backup Singer And Songwriter For Bowie, Cat Stevens, Rod Stewart Dead At 72

A prolific singer who, though nabbing a few solo hits in the 70s, was perhaps best known as a backup to some of the greats has died. British vocalist Linda Lewis passed away at age 72.

Lewis went high on the UK singles chart with “Rock-A-Doodle-Do” in 1973 and “It’s In His Kiss” in 1975. But her five-octave range put her in high demand with some very notable acts, as she went on to perform with David Bowie, Rod Stewart, and former boyfriend Yusuf/Cat Stevens.

“What a voice!” wrote Yusuf/Stevens in a tribute. “I produced a couple of her records, and she sang the sweetest melody on my ballad, ‘How Can I Tell You’ ... Linda was like an amazing bird that kindly visited the window sill of our earthly house for a few days, then flew away back to her garden.”
