Yesterday would have been Aretha Franklin’s 79th birthday, and Mariah Carey paid tribute to the Queen of Soul on social media, sharing a clip of she and Aretha performing “Chain of Fools" for “VH1 Divas Live” in 1998.
The clip was part of what Mariah calls “Divas Week,” celebrating the birthdays of such divas as Aretha, Chaka Khan (March 23rd) and Diana Ross (March 26th) and herself (March 27th).
In the Aretha clip, Mariah narrates the scene using an excerpt from her memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah.” “She told the audience that she and 'my newest girlfriend' didn't get to rehearse. 'But she's going to come out and join me.' The band began 'Chain of Fools,' and I walked out on the stage," she says, "Her energy was so powerful. I just kept my focus on her and sang when she told me to sing. And we did the song."
