Neil Young won’t be playing Farm Aid this year. He’s pulled out of the event taking place next month in Hartford, Connecticut, which was set to be his first public performance since the 2019 edition.
Taking to his Neil Young Archives website, the musician – who’s also a Farm Aid board members alongside Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, and Dave Matthews – says he’s withdrawing from the event due to the rise in COVID cases. He doesn’t want to play an event like that until it feels “safe for everyone.”
“All you people who can’t go to a concert because you still don’t feel safe, I stand with you,” Neil continues. “While I respect Willie, John and Dave’s decisions to stick with it and play, I am not of the same mind. It is a tough call.”
