Though the original 1985 recording of “We Are The World” was festooned with notable names, there were a few stars mysteriously missing…and now we know why. Music legends like Billy Joel, Tina Turner, Steve Wonder and Bruce Springsteen all showed up to A&M Recording Studios in Hollywood, California following the “American Music Awards” to sing their hearts out for the benefit of African famine relief. However, icons like Prince and Madonna weren’t part of the project.
Now, thanks to the documentary, “The Greatest Night In Pop,” we know what happened to the missing musician. It turns out that Prince was asked to join by his peer Sheila E. However, The Purple One would only agree to take part if he could record a guitar solo in a room all by himself. When that couldn’t be accommodated, Huey Lewis took Prince’s place. As for the Madonna, she was shockingly not invited! Still an up-and-comer, the Material Girl was passed over in favor of Cyndi Lauper who was a hotter-selling ticket at the time.
“The Greatest Night In Pop” premiered Friday at the Sundance Film Festival last week and will be available for streaming on Netflix starting Monday.
