Stewart Copeland will revisit Police’s early days in a new book he’s working on, due for release in 2022. He pieced the book together with a collection of diary entries, which he says are more detailed than you’d think.

Looking back at the band’s “starving years,” Stewart says he wrote and doodled in his diaries daily as they carried amps around, loaded in and out of gigs, collected money and paid rent. The book will bring it as far back as the moment Stewart first met Sting, and their first rehearsals together as Police took shape.

“I look back and there’s this kind of desperation. At the time, I remember being full of angst and driven but optimistic – assuming, ‘I know I’m going to make it. We’re going to make it. I know we’re going to make it,’” Stewart says. “It was just this pace, day after day after day, the grind of it.”
