Procul Harum’s Gary Brooker Dies

Procul Harum frontman Gary Brooker died Saturday at the age of 57 after a battle with cancer.

An obituary for Brooker posted to the band’s website called him a “brightly shining, irreplaceable light in the music industry,” noting he “had been receiving treatment for cancer, but died peacefully at home.” 

Brooker was the singer and co-writer of Procul Harum’s biggest hit “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” The band was formed in 1966 by Brooker, Keith Reid, Robin Trower and organist Matthew Fisher. Although the band broke up in 1977, Booker was behind several reunion tours. 

Brooker also worked with several other artists including George Harrison on “All Things Must Pass,” “Gone Troppo” and “Somewhere in England.” He also played in Eric Clapton’s touring band in 1979 and toured as part of Ringo Starr’s All-Starr Band from 1997-99.

He was also named a Member of the Order of the British Empire by the Queen in 2003.
