Pee Wee Ellis has died. The jazz saxophonist best known for his work leading bands for James Brown and Van Morrison has passed away at 80 after “complications with his heart.”

Born in Bradenton, Florida in 1941, Pee Wee’s career was jumpstarted by Sonny Rollins when they happened to meet in New York City in 1957. Sonny trained him, and Pee Wee went on to join James Brown’s Revue, quickly becoming his bandleader.

Taking to Twitter, Bootsy Collins has paid tribute to the late legend, calling him a “silent genius.” May he rest in peace.
