For better or worse, “All I Want For Christmas” has become the modern-day musical signal that the holidays are here. For almost a decade, Mariah Carey has been talking about how the inspiration for the song started on a Casio keyboard when she was a little girl, but co-writer Walter Afanasieff says that just ain’t so. The real story, according to Afanasieff, is that he was playing the tune on a piano… Carey started singing…and “they worked from there.” He goes on to say that it’s impossible that Carey wrote the song on a keyboard because “she doesn’t understand music…she doesn’t play anything…piano or keyboard…she doesn’t know chord changes, music theory, or anything like that.” So, “to claim she wrote a very complicated chord-structured song with her finger on a Casio keyboard when she was a little girl, is kind of a tall tale.”
