As we previously told you, Procol Harum's frontman Gary Brooker passed away on February 19 at the age of 57 after a battle with cancer. In his concert on Saturday night, Billy Joel played tribute to Brooker, playing the band's 1967 hit "A White Shade of Pale."
It is not the first time Joel has played this song, covering a snippet of it in 2021 in Cincinnati and in a 2014 Town Hall Q&A and concert with Howard Stern, but this performance definitely had special meaning to it. During his show at Las Vegas's Allegiant Stadium, Joel played the song after he sang his own "Only the Good Die Young." Coincidence? We think not.
Earlier in the week, Joel played tribute to Brooker on his social media. He shared a pic of Brooker sitting at a piano and wrote, "Sorry to hear about the passing of Gary Brooker.
Rest in Peace."
