After a 21-month break due to the pandemic, Billy Joel finally re-started his residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Friday in front of a sold-out crowd of excited fans.
“Good evening New York City!” Billy greeted the crowd. “We’re back in the Garden. I want to thank you for waiting…Sorry that we shut everything down, but we’re back.”
The show featured several New York-centric moments, including the crowd going wild during “Miami 2017” when he sang the line, “Seen the lights go out on Broadway/I saw the Empire State laid low," acknowledging that was exactly what happened.
Billy also acknowledged the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, displaying a fireman’s helmet from 9/11 on his piano, just like he did at the Concert for New York City benefit that he played at MSG in October 2001. “I just thought we should have it here tonight,” he said before singing “New York State of Mind.”
Other songs in the set included the classic “Piano Man,” “She’s Always A Woman,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” “Uptown Girl,” “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me," “Only The Good Die Young" and more.
