Bono is on his press tour for his new memoir “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story” but he’s still a rock star, and is now giving fans insight into what may become U2’s next record. In an interview with the “New York Times,” Bono says they have actually finished an album called “Songs of Ascent,” but says “we’re not putting (it) out,” noting they didn’t “scrap it,” just put it on hold.
Instead he wants to go in a different direction with the next album, describing it as a “noisy, uncompromising, unreasonable guitar album,” to “put the part of me, the anger that hasn’t been managed, to good use.”
“Over [their last] two albums, ‘Songs of Innocence” and ‘[Songs of] Experience,’ our songwriting returned. Now we need to put the firepower of rock ’n’ roll back,” he says. “I don’t know who is going to make our f**k-off rock ’n’ roll album. You almost want an AC/DC, you want Mutt Lange,” referring to the famed producer who’s worked with Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, AC/DC, and more.
Bono adds, “The approach. The discipline. The songwriting discipline. That’s what we want.”
