After years of turning down requests for his songs to be used in commercials, Bruce Springsteen appeared in a Super Bowl commercial for Jeep last night.  The ad, “The Middle,” was shot over five days last month in Kansas, Colorado, and Nebraska, and has Bruce waxing poetic about Americans coming together again and finding common ground.

“Fear has never been the best of who we are,” The Boss says. “We just have to remember the very soil we stand on is common ground. So we can get there. We can make it to the mountaintop, through the desert …and we will cross this divide.”

No actual Bruce song appeared in the ad, although it did feature an instrumental written by Springsteen and producer Ron Aniello.

Apparently Olivier François, global chief marketing officer for the brand’s parent company, Stellantis, has been trying to get Bruce in an ad for over a decade, with Bruce’s manager telling Variety that “when he showed us the outline for ‘The Middle,’ our immediate reaction was, ‘Let’s do it.’”
