Cher was in Pakistan this weekend to meet Kavaan, who was dubbed “the world’s loneliest elephant,” ahead of the animals’ departure from the Pakistan zoo. The overweight Asian bull elephant has been in an Islamabad zoo in for 35 years, and lost his partner in 2012. He was being moved to a Cambodian sanctuary, where he’ll live out his retirement.

Cher and animal rights activists have spent years trying to secure Kavaan’s trip to the sanctuary. She got to visit the animal on Friday, and also met with Prime Minister Imran Kahn to thank him for making the animal’s move possible.

“My wishes have finally come true', Cher said in a statement “We have been counting down to this moment and dreaming of it for so long and to finally see Kaavan transported out of (the Islamabad) zoo will remain with us forever.”

  • Kavaan’s journey will be part of a Smithsonian Channel documentary. No airdate has been announced.
