In the wake of devastating wildfires in Maui, Walmart and the Salvation Army have teamed up to bring holiday cheer to the Hawaiian community of Lahaina. Walmart has donated 35-thousand toys to children affected by the disaster to help spread joy during the holiday season. And the Salvation Army helped to organize a holiday celebration where local children were surprised with the toys, lifting the spirits of the entire community.

A pair of Maui elementary schools, King Kamehameha III and Princess Nahi’ena’ena, played a central role in the celebrations. King Kamehameha III School was severely damaged in the fire and all of its students and staff relocated to Princess Nahi’ena’ena, where the Christmas party was held. The event, which marked three months since the wildfires, saw hundreds of toys handed out to the kids and Walmart gift cards distributed to the school staff.

In addition to the school event, Walmart hosted a Winter Wonderland Toy Shopping Spree event where over 18-hundred children from Maui and their families got to choose multiple toys free of charge. The joy and excitement witnessed during these events shows how resilient the Maui community is and what a difference an infusion of holiday cheer can make.
