Cleveland musician and radio DJ Michael Stanley died Friday at the age of 72, after battling lung cancer.
Stanley was a member of the 70s band the Tree Stumps, who later changed their name to Silk. He also released two solo albums, 1972’s “Michael Stanley” and 1973’s “Friends and Legends.” He eventually started the Michael Stanley Band in 1974, which became the first Cleveland band to headline the Coliseum, with the bill also including REO Speedwagon and Cheap Trick.
The group’s biggest hit was the tune “He Can’t Love You,” which peaked at 33 on the “Billboard" Hot 100. It appeared on the band’s album “Heartland,” which also featured a guest appearance by E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemmons.
For the past 30 years, Stanley was a DJ at Cleveland radio station WNCX-FM. He had been off the air since February 19th.
