The late Marvin Gaye was honored this weekend with a street named after him in Detroit.
In conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Gaye’s classic album “What’s Going On,” the street sign was unveiled between Monica St. and W. Outer Drive, the corner of the house where Gaye lived when he was coming up with the album. The album’s cover was shot in the backyard.
The street naming was part of Detroit Avenue of Fashion’s Juneteenth festivities, and Gaye’s brother along with his broher Antwaun Gay, members of his family and Motown alumni attended the unveiling.
- ONE MORE THING! Warner Bros. has purchased the rights to “What’s Going On,” the Allen Hughes-directed biopic on Marvin Gaye, which is being produced by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. “This is so personal for me,” Hughes told Deadline, noting that every film he’s made “had some Marvin Gaye in it.” He adds, “He’s the artist’s artist, with this ethereal voice that just comes out of the heavens. There have been plenty of great artists, and then Marvin, in his own lane.”
