Elvis Costello is reuniting with his first bandmate Allan Mayes for a new album, “Rusty: The Resurrection of Rust,” which is set to release on June 10th. The quartet Rusty was already together when Costello joined on New Year’s Day 1972, performing for the year in Liverpool clubs.
The reunion was Mayes’ idea according to Costello in a press release. “So, when Mayes asked me if I wanted to celebrate this anniversary by getting together to play a few songs that we used to know, I said, ‘Absolutely not! Let’s make the record we would have cut when we were 18 if anyone had let us.”
The new album features six songs from Rusty’s 1972 set lists, including the Costello-written “Warm House” and an original Costello-Mayes collaboration called “Maureen and Sam,” plus several covers.
