Eric Clapton has successfully sued a woman over an $11 bootleg of a concert.
A German woman attempted to sell a single live bootleg recording of a 1980s Clapton concert on eBay, and the millionaire rocker sent an affidavit to a court in Düsseldorf claiming it was an illegal recording. The woman said her late husband had purchased the original CD at a department store and she had no idea that selling it was infringing on Clapton’s copyright.
The woman appealed to the court but a judge ruled that it didn’t matter if the woman didn’t buy the recording, or that she didn’t know it was an illegal recording. She is now required to pay legal fees of both parties, about $3,500, and if she continues to try to sell the recording she could face a $283,000 fine or six months in jail.
