In November of 2021, Sebastien Roure was searching a World War II battlefield in France with his metal detector when he found a class ring. The ring was inscribed with the initial 'R' and the name 'Kuroda', and he had a feeling that the ring would be important to someone.

After researching for months, Roure discovered the high school class ring had belonged to U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Robert Kuroda, a Medal of Honor recipient who grew up in Honolulu, joined the army at the age of 20, and was killed in action in France in October of 1944. Roure made contact with Kuroda’s family, who flew to France to recover the fallen soldier’s ring. Kuroda’s nephew, Kevin, says having the ring back “meant the world” to the family.

The ring is now prominently displayed alongside Kuroda’s Medal of Honor at the family’s auto body business in Waipahu, Hawaii. Earlier this week, Roure and his family visited the Kuroda family on the island of Oahu, getting to see the ring again and to meet Kuroda’s family. The Kurodas are taking the Roure Family on a tour of the island to thank them for returning a part of their family’s history.
