Joni Mitchell was celebrated this weekend as the 2022 MusiCares Person of the Year, with a whole host of artists coming out to pay tribute to the musical icon.
Performances at the celebration included Billy Porter, singing her classic “Both Sides Now,” John Legend sang “River,” Brandi Carlile, who along with Jon Batiste served as artistic directors for the event, performed “Woodstock,” with Stephen Stills on guitar, Cyndi Lauper sang “The Magdalene Laundries,” Leon Bridges performed “Amelia” from her 1976 album, “Hejira, Chloe Bailey performed “Chelsea Morning,” Violet Grohl, daughter of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, sang “Help Me,” St. Vincent performed “Court and Spark,” Pentatonix performed a mashup of "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" and Mitchell's "Raised on Robbery" and more. Graham Nash, a one-time boyfriend of Joni’s, performed remotely, sharing his take on "A Case of You."
Joni, making a rare public appearance, even sang a little herself, singing a bit of her classic “Big Yellow Taxi” and “The Circle Game,” with Brandi, Batiste, Yola, Lauren Daigle and others.
“Everybody was splendid — it just kept getting better and better and better,” Joni said in a short speech, “I can retire now and just let other people do it."
