We all need affordable, quality health care, but that’s not always easy and where you live can make a big difference. Health care in the U.S. is expensive, with the average American spending $12,914 per year on personal health care, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. But some states are doing a better job of meeting the needs of their residents than others and a new report reveals which ones those are.

  • WalletHub has released their annual list of the best and worst states for health care.
  • They compared all 50 states and Washington, D.C. across 44 factors related to health care cost, accessibility and outcomes.
  • They looked at everything from average monthly insurance premiums to the cost of a dental visit to the quality of the public hospital system.
  • Based on all those factors, Minnesota is the state with the best health care, coming in first for cost and seventh for access.
  • Maine, which is seventh overall, is first for access, while Utah, fifth overall, is number one for outcomes.
  • The worst state for health care is West Virginia, landing at number 50 for outcomes and 49 for cost.
