While Mariah Carey has been unofficially called the Queen of Christmas, there are a few artists out there who are taking issue with her wanting the title officially. Mariah has been trying to trademark the title “Queen of Christmas” but now she’s facing a possible legal battle over it thanks to singers Darlene Love and Elizabeth Chan.
While Mariah is known for her holiday hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” Love has also been synonymous with Christmas, particularly for her rendition of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” a classic she would sing each year on “The Late Show with David Letterman” before he retired. Meanwhile, Chan is known for being the only singer-songwriter who releases exclusively Christmas music, and even has an album called “Queen of Christmas."
And now both are taking issue with Mariah wanting the title for herself. Chan’s attorneys have filed a formal declaration opposing Mariah’s trademark request, and when Love found out about it, she also shared her outrage over it.
- “Is it true that Mariah Carey trademarked ‘Queen of Christmas’?” Love recently shared. “What does that mean, that I can’t use that title?” She added, “David Letterman officially declared me the Queen of Christmas 29 years ago, a year before she released ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You,’ and at 81 years of age I’m NOT changing anything.” She notes, “I’ve been in the business for 52 years, have earned it and can still hit those notes! If Mariah has a problem call David or my lawyer!!”
- As for Chan, she tells “Variety,” “Christmas has come way before any of us on earth, and hopefully will be around way after any of us on earth," adding, “And I feel very strongly that no one person should hold onto anything around Christmas or monopolize it in the way that Mariah seeks to in perpetuity,” noting, “That’s just not the right thing to do. Christmas is for everyone. It’s meant to be shared; it’s not meant to be owned.”
So far Mariah hasn’t commented on the controversy.
