Fans of Marvin Gaye have something new to look forward to later this month. In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the iconic 1973 album “Let’s Get It On” is about to be reissued on digital platforms. But there’s so much more…
The expanded album comes with 33 bonus tracks – 18 of them previously unreleased. It also features a batch of the largely instrumental David Van DePitte Sessions, featuring songs that Gaye composed and produced – and DePitte arranged – before “Let’s Get It On”. Bonus: Those songs also happen to feature Herbie Hancock on piano.
Furthering the album’s legacy, the Grammy Museum is set to host a “Let’s Get It On” 50th anniversary event on August 23rd with musical icons like Motown pioneer Smokey Robinson and R&B writer / producer Jimmy Jam commemorating the record.
As for his death, Gaye was killed the day before his 45th birthday by his father, Marvin Gay Sr., on April 1st, 1984. The shooting took place at their house in Los Angeles, California when Gay tried to break up an altercation between Marvin Sr. and his mother. After pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter, Gaye Sr. was sentenced to a six-year suspended sentence and five years of probation.
