A lawsuit over whether Michael Jackson actually sang on some of his posthumously released songs is finally over. The singer’s Estate and Sony Music have reached a settlement in the lawsuit, which was filed in 2014 by a woman named Vera Serova.
The proposed class action suit claimed songs on the album “Michael,” released after the King of Pop’s 2009 death, were performed by someone else, even though the songs producer, Jackson friend Eddie Cascio, insisted it was Michael’s voice. Just last month the disputed tracks were pulled from streaming services.
The suit has been awaiting a ruling as to whether the case could move forward in California Supreme Court for more than two years. A State appeals court ruled that the album fell under free speech protections, and dismissed the case. Serova’s lawyers argued there was no First Amendment right to mislead customers, but Sony and the Estate insisted they believed Jackson sung the songs, but could not verify it.
As for the settlement, no details were revealed although Sony and the Estate said both sides agreed to end the lawsuit.
