Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman” is airing on Netflix now, but it could have looked a whole lot different if a certain King of Pop had his way. While appearing on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Gaiman revealed that Michael Jackson expressed a desire to play Morpheus in a TV adaption of the comic book back in the nineties.

“By 1996, I was being taken to Warners, where the then-president of Warner Bros sat me down and told me that Michael Jackson had phoned him the day before and asked him if he could star as Morpheus in The Sandman,” Gaiman says. “So, there was a lot of interest in this, and they knew that it was one of the Crown Jewels and what did I think? And I was like, ‘Ooh.’”

Of course that never happened. Instead, actor Tom Sturridge plays the role in the new Netflix series.
