Olivia Newton-John appears to have lost her long battle with cancer. The singer passed away at age 73, with the news confirmed on her official Facebook page. While the cause hasn't been 'officially' confirmed - the entertainer has valiantly fought the disease for decades.
“Dame Olivia Newton-John (73) passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends,” read the statement posted by her husband John Easterling. “We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”
It went on to add, “Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer,” noting, “Her healing inspiration and pioneering experience with plant medicine continues with the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, dedicated to researching plant medicine and cancer. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made in her memory to the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund.”
- Olivia is known for such breakout pop hits such as 1981’s “Physical,” which Billboard says was the number one song of the decade, as well as “I Honestly Love You,” which won the GRAMMY for Record of the Year in 1974, ”Have You Never Been Mellow” and more. She sold over 100-million records throughout her career. She even had country hits with “If You Love Me Let Me Know” and “Let Me Be There,” which earned her a GRAMMY for Best Country Female and an Academy of Country Music award for Most Promising Female Vocalist and Country Music Association’s 1974 Female Vocalist of the Year Award.
- In addition to singing she’s probably best known for her role in the 1978 big-screen musical “Grease,” which spawned such hit songs as “You’re The One That I Want,” and “Summer Nights,” with John Travolta and “Hopelessly Devoted To You.” She also starred in the 1980 film, “Xanadu,” which resulted in hit songs “Magic” as well as the title track. She also reunited with Travolta in the 1983 romantic comedy, "Two of a Kind."
- Olivia was diagnosed with breast cancer the first time in 1992 and became a tireless advocate for that cause as well as her other humanitarian efforts. In September, 2018 she revealed her third cancer diagnosis, this time at the base of her spine.
- ONE MORE THING! Olivia's good friend and "Grease" co-star John Travolta took to Instagram to pay tribute to her. "My dearest Olivia, you made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible," he writes. "I love you so much. We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever!
