Following the devastating wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui, professional golfer Collin Morikawa took to Instagram to pledge his support to the community where he has significant family ties. “Maui has always held a special place in my heart.” the 26-year-old PGA champ writes, before adding that his grandfather used to own a restaurant in Lahaina, the town that suffered the most damage from the wildfires.

Morikawa then announces that he will donate $1,000 for every birdie he makes during this season’s FedExCup Playoffs. If you didn't know, a birdie is when a golfer scores one stroke under par on a hole. For context, Morikawa scored 15 birdies in the four rounds of this past weekend’s FedEx St Jude Championship, pledging $15-thousand from that tournament alone to support Maui wildfire victims.

Since the wildfires are so recent, Morikawa doesn’t know exactly which charity organization he will be donating to, but he writes that he will identify the “best place for the funds to go” as the situation evolves. He also says he’ll share the progress of the recovery effort and let his followers know where they can donate to help. His post was met with gratitude and appreciation from fans, followers, and fellow lovers of Hawaii and aloha culture.
