Music mogul Clive Davis is back to throwing his star-studded pre-Grammy gala after a three-year break and the evening was packed with tributes to artists we’ve lost by performers we love.

Jennifer Hudson performed an incredibly stirring tribute to Whitney Houston by singing her hit, "Greatest Love of All” after Kevin Costner kicked off the evening by regaling the crowd with stories about Houston during their filming of the movie “The Bodyguard.” Costner said of his co-star, “We were both struck by Whitney the first time we ever saw her. …. Whitney would be our common ground.” Later in the evening, Sheryl Crow performed a tribute to late Fleetwood Mac member Christine McVie by covering “Songbird” and “Say You Love Me.” Performance powerhouses Lizzo and Elvis Costello also took to the stage to sing, as well as legendary crooner Frankie Valli who performed “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” resulting in a full audience sing-along.

This wasn’t just an evening of tributes, however. It was also a celebration of 50 years of hip-hop music. Rappers Lil Baby and Lil Wayne did the honors by performing sets that included “California Breeze” and “Uproar” with a little help from Swizz Beatz.
