The members of UB40 are mourning the loss of one of their original members. Astro, the longtime singer and multi-instrumentalist of the reggae band, passed away at the age of 64 following a short illness.
“We are absolutely devastated and completely heartbroken to have to tell you that our beloved Astro has today passed away after a very short illness,” read a statement posted to social media. “The world will never be the same without him." It adds, “We ask you to please respect his family’s privacy at this incredibly difficult time.”
Astro, whose real name is Terence Wilson, joined UB40 in 1978 not long after their formation. He left the group in 2013 when he left to team up with Ali Campbell and keyboardist Mickey Virtue, after they quit the band.
The group is best known for their hit covers of “Red Red Wine,” which went to number one in 1983, as well as covers of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” and “I Got You Babe,” featuring The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde.
