UB40 founding member Brian Travers passed away Sunday at his home in the UK after a “long and heroic battle” with brain cancer. The saxophonist was 62.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our comrade, brother, founding UB40 member and musical legend, Brian David Travers,” the band shared on Facebook. “We are all devastated by this news and ask that you respect the family’s need for privacy at this time.”

Travers, who was from Birmingham, created UB40 with his friends in 1978, naming the band after a form for claiming unemployment benefits in Britain. They are best known for their number one singles, a cover of hit “Red Red Wine,” as well as a cover of “Can’t Help Falling in Love With You.”

Travers last played with the band at a hometown show at Arena Birmingham in December, 2019.
